Week Seven - September 10th, 2004

Now that the conventions are over and we are fully immersed in official campaign season, we can look forward to the presidential debates.  There should be three of them scheduled for some time spread out through the month of October (although it is already being talked about in the news this week that Bush might only do two).  Until then, I’ll keep putting together my weekly email with all sorts of fun facts and useful information.  Thanks for reading them and hopefully you are sending them to others that you know.

Dubya Fun Fact #13

Dubya decided it was a good idea to nominate Charles Pickering to the federal courts.  Pickering has a strong record of opposing civil rights and is considered by many to be a segregationist.  As a judge, Pickering engaged in unethical conduct in an effort to reduce the sentence for a defendant convicted for burning a cross on the lawn of an interracial family.

Democrats did all they could to keep Pickering from being approved in Senate confirmation hearings.  Since they were successful for over two years, Dubya used a loophole which avoids the confirmation process to appoint Pickering to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.  And just to show how supportive he is of civil rights and the common respect of minorities, Dubya picked Martin Luther King Day to announce his appointment of Charles Pickering as a federal judge.

Here is a CNN article about the appointment and here is a list of all the glorious things Pickering has done as a judge and state senator.

Dubya Fun Fact #14

Dubya’s administration produced fake pro-Bush "news" spots for the Dept of Health and Human Services.  They went as far as to include phony journalists who praise Dubya's controversial Medicare Bill and they added a fake crowd to cheer the whole thing on.  To make things even worse, The Bush administration deliberately didn't tell Congress that the Medicare Bill will cost more than $100 billion more than advertised when trying to pass the bill through Congress.  Here is an article about the fake news.

One more item to add.  In Dubya’s speech last week at the Republican National Convention, he talked proudly of “reforming” Medicare and providing real benefits to seniors.  The very next day it was announced that Medicare premiums would see the largest increase ever – 17%.  This is largely due to Dubya’s Medicare bill that he misled the public and congress in to supporting.  And it will effect 38.9 million Americans!  Here is an article about it.

Kerry Fun Fact #11

As president, John Kerry will strongly enforce our nation's civil rights laws by doing the following:

  • Support affirmative action to reduce discrimination and expand opportunity
  • Strongly enforce equal justice for all victims of hate violence.
  • He will also back the Fairness Act to reverse damage done to civil rights laws by right-wing judges (such as Charles Pickering) and only appoint judges with a record of enforcing the nation's civil rights and anti-discrimination laws.
  • For more on Kerry’s stance on civil rights and equal opportunity for all, click here.

Kerry Fun Fact #12

The following is a list touching on a couple of the ways that Kerry and Edwards plan to protect and strengthen Medicare which will provide real benefits.

  • Require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to negotiate better prices for prescription drugs, rather than paying the highest prices.
  • Allow the reimportation of safe, FDA-approved drugs so that Americans can get the discounts on medications that are available in Canada and other countries.
  • Require transparency rules for Pharmacy Benefit Managers that do business with the Federal government to reveal their profits from the drug industry and bulk purchasing.
  • Kerry’s full plan can be viewed here.

Dubya Quote of the Week
The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation’s history.  I mean in this century’s history.  But we all lived in this century.  I didn’t live in this century.” – George W. Bush, 9/15/95

What the hell is he talking about?  I’m sure there are a lot of people that wish he didn’t live in the 20th century.

Other Quote of the Week

"It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice, because if we make the wrong choice then the danger is that we'll get hit again and we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States." – Dick Cheney, 9/7/04

And the very appropriate response from Senator John Edwards…

"What he said to the American people, was that if you go to the polls in November and elect anyone other than us, then another terrorist attack occurs, it's your fault. This is un-American.'' – John Edwards, 9/7/04

Here is a link to a New York Times article (registration required) that mentions both quotes as well as some of the other bickering between campaigns this week.

  • Here is an interesting little read.  I am no fan of Moby, but he does make a very interesting point in comparing the people’s taste in politics to their taste in music or dating.  Check it out…it’s only a couple paragraphs.
  • NotBush.com – The goal of this website is to put informative and persuasive "talking points" obtained from mainstream media sources into a readable and entertaining format so that readers, like you, will return often and supplement their knowledge base with new "talking points.”
  • American Family Voices Organization – An organization founded in 2000 to be a strong voice for middle and low income families on economic, health care, and consumer issues.  They strive to educate the public and push for legislation on a number of vital issues to make American families more secure.

  • Forgot My Lunch - My friend John's website.  On it he has a re-defeat Bush section that archives past Volumes of my weekly BU - - SH - - email as well as some other good info.  Definitely check out the "Bush Vs Bush from the Daily Show" link.  It is very funny.

Haikus of the Week

Bush is not to blame
He's bossed by higher powers
Jesus said he should

They live in a place
that has resources we need
why don't we bomb them?

Media (books, CDs, etc.)

  • Bushworld: Enter at Your Own Risk.  A book by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd that compiles well over a hundred columns and summarizes the Bush dynasty under a single comprehensive analogy: an alternate universe called Bushworld ("It's their reality. We just live and die in it.")
  • 50 Ways You Can Show George the Door in 2004 - With creativity and insight, Cohen, a well-known activist and Ben & Jerry's co-founder, and Salzman, former campaign director for Greenpeace and president of Cause communications, tell readers how to show President Bush "the door in 2004."
