Week Eight - September 16th, 2004

Greetings once again,

In weeks to come I plan to add a section of fun facts regarding some of Dubya’s cronies.  Each week I’ll profile someone different…Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, etc.  However, it’s been a busy week at work so this week’s is a little shorter than past Volumes.  I’ll make up for it next week.  Enjoy.

Dubya Fun Fact #15

This Monday, a ten year ban on certain assault weapons expired.  Although it is Congress who would have to pass a bill extending the ban for Dubya to sign, many blame Dubya for failing to offer any leadership whatsoever on the issue.  He sat quiet hoping that the issue wouldn’t come up.  His counterparts in the Republican controlled House and Senate failed to make time for a vote.

Dubya Fun Fact #16

President Bush proposes $164 million for the COPS (Office of Community Oriented Policing Services) program in Fiscal Year 2004, a decrease of 85 percent since Fiscal Year 2002.  COPS was funded at $1.1 billion in Fiscal Year 2002. The President's budget request for COPS represents a 100 percent cut to the COPS Universal Hiring program, a 100 percent cut to the COPS in School program, and a 66 percent cut to the COPS Technology program.

Here is information about the other programs that Dubya’s FY 2005 budget cuts funding to.  Here is a link to the website for COPS.

So while severely cutting necessary funding to programs that provide resources to the law enforcement community at home, Dubya let the weapons ban expire.  So he cuts funding to cops while at the same time making assault weapons legal and more accessible.  And he says he is making America safer because he spent 200 billion dollars to remove Saddam Hussein?

Kerry Fun Fact #13

Kerry will reauthorize the assault weapons ban as well as support John McCain’s legislation to close the gun show loophole.  Kerry will also enforce the gun laws on the books, as Dubya promised and failed to do, and also create new regional task forces of U.S. Attorneys to battle the interstate trafficking of guns.  John Kerry fully supports extending the ban on assault weapons that Dubya and friends let expire on Monday.

Here is an article about the weapons ban.  Here is another one.

Kerry Fun Fact #14

Rather than cutting the funding to COPS and other programs that aid communities and their law enforcement, Kerry fully supports the COPS program.  By restoring full funding for COPS, Kerry and Edwards will enable America’s police departments to increase the number of cops on the beat by 10 percent over the next 10 years.  Rather than raising taxes, Kerry’s plan to fund his anti-crime agenda is paid for by a routine extension of customs fees already included in numerous pending bills.

Here is more information on the Kerry/Edwards plan regarding crime prevention and the weapons ban.

Dubya Quote of the Week
"There’s no question that the minute I got elected, the storm clouds on the horizon were getting nearly directly overhead." – George W. Bush, May 11, 2001

Other Quote of the Week

“George Bush chose to make the job of terrorists easier and make the job of America's police officers harder, and that's just plain wrong.” – John F. Kerry, September 14, 2004 in response to Dubya and his fellow Republicans failing to renew the ban on assault weapons.  Here is an article about the issue.
